I agree with the post on combining chocolate and spice. I live in Vancouver and a local chocolatier (Thomas Haas) who makes a chocolate with Garam masala and and hot chillis. It is the most incredible taste experience I have ever had.

Re. hot climates

I have successfully grown figs, Sauvignon Blanc grapes, sweet peppers and, yes, chilis outdoors in Warwickshire this year.

Either they can grow in temperate conditions or global warming is scarily advanced.

I read somwhere that chillies are also powerfully antiseptic --wich also would make sense in hot climates, right?
One of my friend's mother (Originally from Guadeloupe) used to munch raw 'piments oiseaux' (the tiny mean red ones), the mere sight of which made me sweat profusely ;-) (the smell, actually).

make your own chocolate. Stir in some liquidised or powdered chilli.

coco + chilli buzz. Truly unreal.

You'll never go back to Cadbury again.

Thanks for this gem of a post JP on a subject close to my heart. A physician friend of mine had once told me that green chillies provided a useful medicinal input in some contexts, and this also induces craving for that (among those who are seasoned eaters of chilli). Through training the mind, one can arrest / bear the "pain" factor, and learn to enjoy the flavour and the hot-ness! I also discovered while eating an Indonesian meal, that the verrrry hot also enables a host of very subtle exquisite flavours and fragrances to be sensed. Best, chutki
