It’s that time of year

It’s been an eventful year for me, what with changing jobs in March, changing firms in October, nearly moving house and then not, and finally having a heart attack a few weeks ago.

It’s been an eventful year for me, what with starting this blog in late February, and really feeling part of a small but close-knit community ever since.

It’s been an eventful year for me. I’ve learnt a lot, and you guys have been instrumental in that.
Thank you.

Have a great New Year.

Thanks for all the entertainment and best wishes for a speedy recovery. Would that my Computer Weekly blog could match the variety of yours.

It’s been an eventful year for you? No kidding! Corrupting the youth (and the aged) with this damn Line Rider thing! I thought the older bloggers were supposed to set a good example. But no. Just look at the terrible productivity losses you are fomenting!

While I share Kat Herding’s sympathies, I seem, once again, inclined to fall back on the Long View of History. In this case that view stretches back to 1985, when Neil Postman’s AMUSING OURSELVES TO DEATH first appeared in bookstores (and when we still haunted bookstores and talked about what we found there). I take some comfort in seeing that a 20th Anniversary Edition of the book was released, but we have a bad habit of erecting monuments and then ignoring the words inscribed upon them! I suppose that the very experience of amusement can be as addicting as some of those substances that we consume; so, once again, I have to fall back on Isaiah Berlin and just accept the human condition for what it is.

    Hi JP,

Have lurked for months and enjoyed your blog even though I don’t work in the tech space (I’m in advertising).

Need to send you a personal note re the music scene (blues & jazz) in India, do let me have your email address.

All the best on the health front, in your new role at BT, and for the New Year generally.

    Best regards,

    -Ash.
