In this case that view stretches back to 1985, when Neil Postman's AMUSING OURSELVES TO DEATH first appeared in bookstores (and when we still haunted bookstores and talked about what we found there). I take some comfort in seeing that a 20th Anniversary Edition of the book was released, but we have a bad habit of erecting monuments and then ignoring the words inscribed upon them! I suppose that the very experience of amusement can be as addicting as some of those substances that we consume; so, once again, I have to fall back on Isaiah Berlin and just accept the human condition for what it is.
