2nd, 3rd and 4th the comments above.

You just have to wonder about the religion that management control and risk elimination has become.

Bill, I read about Michael Power's lecture the day after it happened, bought the pamphlet from Demos and arranged to have lunch with him shortly after. I had been tracking him since his Audit Explosion days.

His thesis in Risk Management Of Everything is something I support strongly, that valuable yet vulnerable professional advice is being overruled and overrun by second-order risks like reputation, only made worse by the growing litigiousness of the environment.

I liked it so much I made him sign my copy!

Wow, that was brilliant. You might enjoy this:

Power talks about uncertainty and anxiety rather than insecurity, but it's a good fit.

JP, what an excellent post. It crystallises all the issues I have had with the business restructuring I have witnessed. I've always been frustrated at the lack of accountability for the promises made whenever an initiative is kicked off - we'll save so much, we'll do more with less, etc. All seems to soak into the sand to disappear until the next great set of 'new clothes' arrive, at which point we're all studying the fine cut of the new outfit. Us proles continue to speak to the same people to get the job done wherever they may be, until internal charging stops us.

Interesting that you find insecurity to be the root cause for much of the failure.

I concur. The effort to make efficient standardized parts out of employees stems from management insecurity and is assisted by employee insecurity.

It takes a great deal of insight and courage to encourage independent thinking and action.
