And I thought it was a well-known practice to update your CV on Linkedin and link to a headhunter or two just before bonus review time. It's the Generation Y version of "tactical BCC:s" on email.

Amazon could do with better tools to mark lack of interest. Having had a similar problem of unwanted recommendations, I'd like to be able to mark product categories "no longer interested". It's possible to do this a little, but only for individual products. You can mark "I own this" at which point Amazon spams you with related items. Or you can say "Not interested" but it still recommends similar items.

These examples all indicate that though actions may speak louder than words, they are no less ambiguous. Interpretation of a digital footprint may result in a very different creature from the one who actually left it.

"j’adoube" isn't going to be much help, consider the example of your daughter's use of last.fm on your account. If she can't be convinced to indicate it's not you post-facto j’adoube is just going to look like covering your tracks which is again significant, but fortunately, nobody but you knows how.

Hey JP. I've often thought of this issue as one of context. What 'mode' am I in while doing something. And is it short or long term. For example: if I suddenly start browsing around, searching and looking at baby toys, it doesn't mean I'm expecting a child. I might just be looking for a gift for a friend. So I won't be interested in investing my attention long term.
To know where a person is 'coming from' when performing some action is to know the context.
Innocent Intent is well put.

Charles, Mike, thanks for your comments. When Facebook, Twitter and even Yammer get funded, there must be some people out there who are capable of understanding community-based returns.

There is a generation of artists who are developing (and living off) a shared community with their fans, rather than "conventional label" record sales - I point particularly at people like Janis Ian and Amanda Palmer.

OTOH, in this "no business proposal will be approved without passing its discrete margin threshold" world, the financial background to get a community-based proposal through senior management first is hard...

The "pleaserobme" site is an interesting example and the one for the Somali pirates even more so. It might even make me rethink my tweeting strategy but then again...
If I am away from Twitter for a day then my online friends get worried. Might take a few days off soon to shock them
