I too found myself captivated by the alarming trend (was cooking lunch at the time – got egg-white over my iPod touch!)
Thought I was going to be hearing ‘one last web2.0 hoorah’ from Larry, but instead found myself baptized into his corruption work.
Nice to see you link to the downloadable version of Larry’s excellent talk.

Robin, the reason it doesn’t bode well is that the stats show an unnatural shape, they suggest that representatives have incumbent power, that they are more and more focused on reelection. Which leads to a whole pile of unwanted outcomes.

I’ve just got the new Lessig book, would be interested to see what you think of it.
It arrived together with Lidwell’s Universal Principles of Design. I now have almost shelf of cool design books to impress my designy friends when they visit.
